Backend Architecture & APIs
REST APIs, microservices and modular backend systems built on Node.js, NestJS and Laravel that stay correct and maintainable under heavy traffic.
Node.js
Laravel
Backend engineer with 8+ years building and operating production web platforms, APIs, distributed services and multi-tenant systems. I work across application architecture, infrastructure, performance, security and deployment, and I lead backend teams. Core stack: Node.js, Laravel, MySQL, Redis, Linux, Kubernetes, NGINX and Cloudflare.
Six areas where I deliver the most value to a product and an engineering team.
REST APIs, microservices and modular backend systems built on Node.js, NestJS and Laravel that stay correct and maintainable under heavy traffic.
Schema design, query optimisation and caching architecture across MySQL, Prisma, Redis, NGINX and Cloudflare, including invalidation and cache-key consistency.
Finding and fixing real bottlenecks with Grafana, Loki, Sentry, request traces and event-loop monitoring, then proving the gain in production.
Independent tenant environments and databases, cross-tenant SSO, webhook and event integrations, rate limiting and access control.
Production Linux and Kubernetes: NGINX, PHP-FPM, Docker, Supervisor, Cloudflare and DigitalOcean, provisioned and debugged end to end.
AI agents connected to internal tools and data through MCP to automate implementation and code review, under specifications and guardrails I define and every change reviewed.

3+ years leading backend teams
Specific systems I designed, debugged or rebuilt in production.
Investigated production API performance with Grafana, Loki, request-duration metrics and event-loop monitoring, then optimised slow endpoints across the API, caching and data-access layers.
Designed a headless cross-tenant SSO architecture for independently hosted tenants: centralised SSO records, short-lived exchange tickets, automatic provisioning, logout propagation and same-origin token exchange.
Newsletter infrastructure on SendGrid Single Sends and webhooks, with delivery tracking, retry handling, campaign metadata, email hashing and sender/domain configuration.
Services integrating Sportmonks football data — fixtures, teams, players, lineups, statistics, live match events and predictions — including migration and parity between legacy and new implementations.
Investigated how image-processing pipelines strip C2PA metadata and designed changes that preserve AI provenance through resizing and optimisation.
Designed and tuned caching across Cloudflare, NGINX, Redis and application layers: cache keys, invalidation, stale content handling, TTLs and reducing origin traffic.
Manage and troubleshoot Linux production infrastructure: NGINX, PHP-FPM, MySQL, Redis, Docker, Kubernetes, Supervisor and cloud-hosted services.

High-traffic football fan platform on a multi-tenant stack with low-latency responses.
Leading Dutch mobile-tech outlet, served through Redis caching for high concurrency.
Large-scale news publisher on multi-tenant caching and a tuned database layer.
Real-estate platform with custom property search and filtering.
Corporate site for an international financial and legal advisory firm.
Smart-technology publication with a scalable back end and dynamic content handling.
Event management app built on REST APIs with responsive front-end views.
Available for contract and consulting work, remote. Below is what companies usually bring me in for.
I design the infrastructure for a new web application from scratch: server sizing, network layout, database and cache layers, deployment pipeline and a rollback plan.
Your site is slow or falls over under load. I profile it, find the real bottleneck — queries, caching, NGINX, or the application itself — and fix it, with before/after numbers.
A second opinion before you commit: stack and architecture choices, build-vs-buy, technical due diligence, and honest review of a plan or an existing codebase.
A production-ready Debian server end to end: web server, application runtimes, databases, SSL certificates, firewall, scheduled jobs, log rotation and automated backups.
Moving to a new server, provider or architecture without downtime, plus CI/CD pipelines so releases stop being a manual, risky event.
Know before your users do. Metrics and alerts, tested restores, SSH and firewall hardening, and a documented recovery procedure.
A written review of an existing system: what is solid, what will break as you grow, and a prioritised list of what to fix first.
Working alongside your developers: code review standards, onboarding, and raising the level of the back-end work the team ships.
